Florence is a museum-city. Founded as a colony of the Etruscan city of Fiesole in about 200 BC, Florence became a commercial republic in the 14th century, in the latter part of it the Medici began consolidating power, eventually becoming bankers to the papacy.

The most famous Medici was Lorenzo who took power in 1469. His court fostered a great flowering of art, music and poetry sponsoring philosophers and artists such as Botticelli, da Vinci and Michelangello turning Florence into the birthplace and capital of the Renaissance.

Florence has an enormous cultural and historical impact. It is one of Italy’s most beautiful cities. All the main attraction are within walking distance from one another including the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, the Piazza della Signoria and the Medici chapels.
