MONTE ETNA - Mount Etna

El Etna (3.349 m.) es el volcán activo más grande de Europa. En el recorrido hacia el monte pasaremos por curiosas poblaciones rodeadas de viñedos, naranjos, donde se sitúa el “castaño de los cien caballos”, de 2000 años de edad. Ya en el volcán visitaremos los Cráteres Silvestre, a 1.950 m. sobre el nivel del mar con una bella panorámica del Golfo de Catania. Duración aproximada: 5 horas.   Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, with its 3.349 meters is a heritage of great naturalistic interest... This is a land of myth and legend. The ancient used to regard the mountain with terror and respect, they called in the name of Vulca, god of fire, and of the Cyclops. We can visit the crater Silvestre, 1950 meters high on sea level overlooking Catania Gulf. Duration: 5 hours approximately.

Catania es la segunda ciudad siciliana situada a las faldas del Etna, la estrecha relación que guarda con el volcán se refleja en la mayoría de sus edificios que incorpora “lava negra” basalto como material de construcción. La Catania actual es una bella ciudad de anchas y ordenadas calles con numerosos edificios de estilo barroco. También visitaremos la riviera Ciclópea, con pueblos de pescadores frente a los que se sitúan los islotes de los cíclopes, que según la mitología fueron arrojados al mar por Polifemo para detener la huida de Ulises. Duración aproximada: 5 horas.

Since the eighteenth century, Catania has been the second most important city of Sicily, supplanting Messina in that respect. Catania was conquered by the Romans in AD 263, by the Middle Ages, it was still an important port, though less prominent than Messina. It flourished until 1169 when it was almost completely destroyed by a violent earthquake; following this catastrophe, Catania was gradually rebuilt. The wide streets and majestic palaces were built during the eighteenth century, coincidental with the Bourbon’s development of Naples. Most of the Catanian buildings are constructed in the gray volcanic stone. We will visit also the Cyclops coast spread with picturesque fishermen villages in front of the Cyclop’s islet where according to the myth, the Cyclops were thrown by the giant Polifemo to avoid Ulyse’s escape.
