Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie islands, with an extension of twenty square kilometres and a population of 5, 500 inhabitants, which triples in high season. Lampedusa is closer to Africa than Itay, situated sixty one miles from the north African coast, where the island's calcerous rock formation originates from. The climate is dry and sometimes windy. The landscape is arid and rocky with numerous palms. Mount Albero Sole is the highest point of the island situated north west of the island. The rocky coast on the northern side of the island is very high and not accessible, however on the south-west side of the island, the rocky coast enjoys many sandy coves and beaches. Beaches and sea in Lampedusa are spotlessly clean, enjoying crystal clear waters perfect for swimming and skin-diving. The climate is warm all year round, and hot in the summer (especially in July and August). The tourist season runs from April to October. The island is easily accessible, by aeroplane from Palermo (about three flights a day) and daily ferries run from Port Empedocle (near Agrigento).
