Day 1 : TOKYO - KYOTO (L)


We'll call for you in the morning, and see you to Tokyo Station, where you'll board the Shinkansen-the Bullet Train-for Kyoto. Be right on time-this train is never late! We'll speed through the tightly packed yet orderly and pleasant suburbs of Tokyo, and before long, we'll be out in open, rolling country, moving comfortably and with hardly a vibration. On the way, weather permitting, we'll have splendid views of the perfect, snow-capped cone of Mount Fuji, almost alongside the track. And in just over two hours, we'll be in the center of classical Kyoto. Most appropriately, we'll take our lunch in Japanese style at the New Miyako Hotel, and then set out to see some of the wonders that draw visitors. We'll take in Sanjusangendo Hall, with its thousand and one images of the Buddha, each individually impressive. Then there's Heian Shrine in its vermilion hues, and Kiyomizu Temple, with its traditional veranda and a structure that encompasses Japanese spirituality. We'll return to our lodgings at the New Miyako Hotel.
