Tips for familyvacation in Japan, travel with children in Japan

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

4-bed rooms
Rooms with four beds are quite popular in ski or marine resorts, but are extremely rare in big cities because business people usually don’t need to confirm 4 bedding rooms, so that the best thing would be to note the name of the few hotels that offer this amenity.

However most family are looking for the way to economize the hotel rates, we assume that 4 bedding rooms are not always cheaper than 2 x twin rooms because most hotels have to provide a deluxe or spacious room in order to set up extra beds, but such rooms can not apply to our special inbound prices in most cases.

REMARKS

Children’s discount at a hotel
Many hotels in another country are getting to provide a special rate for children so as to give a complimentary or half price, but it is not the same situation in Japan. For all of Western hotels, they charge us a full rate when we arrange a bed, but will not charge us when parents sleep with kids without using an extra bed.

On the other hand, for all of Japanese ryokans, we usually provide some different rates depending on their ages. A baby who does not need a sleeping materials and foods is free of charge, a child between 3 to 6 years old who need a small room wear, a set of Futon and happy meal has to pay 50% of the rates, and a child between 7 to 12 years old who need a room wear, a set of Futon and similar menu to the adults will pay 70% of the rates. This standard of price classification is our company’s policy, but some of the ryokans oblige us to follow their own which may vary.

Shops to go with children
( we do not own any of the shops, listing these shops is not an endorsement, just a service to our customers who maybe interested in these shops)

KIDDYLAND: Phone 03-3409-3431

Toys, Toys, and more Toys... Kiddyland is a five-story toy store which specializes in imported and local toys, dolls, games, books, records, remote controlled cars, and just about anything you could mention in the area of creative, educational, and unusual toys. Many of the books and magazines are in English. Open daily from 1000 - 2000 except the 3rd Tuesday of each month when it is closed.

ORIENTAL BAZAAR: Phone 03-3400-3933
Just down the street from Kiddyland is the Oriental Bazaar. Aptly named because it is filled with quality items: new and used kimonos, brass, art, pearls, lacquer ware, prints, and more. The Oriental Bazaar is open every day except Thursdays, 0930 - 1830 and some of the staff speak English.

HAKUHINKAN TOY PARK: Phone 03-3571-8008
This is one of Tokyo's largest and best toy stores, with six floors. In addition to the usual dolls, puzzles, games, and other items, there's a large assortment of gag gifts, and a video arcade on the fourth floor. Open daily 11am-8pm.

BIG CAMERA YURAKUCHO-TEN: Phone-03-5221-1111
This huge, eight-floor store near the Ginza offers not only single-lens reflex, large and medium format, and digital cameras, but also computers, DVD players, video cameras, watches, toys, and much more. Note, however, that it caters primarily to Japanese; English-speaking sales clerks are scarce and export models are limited. Ask for the English-language brochure, and if you're buying sensitive equipment, make sure it will work outside Japan and comes with English-language instructions. Open daily 10 am to 8 PM.
