Tondaya Merchant's House Kyoto

A traditional Japanese Home - The Perfect site for your Wedding Ceremony

Our history and life style in Nishijin. The house of the Tanaka family is a registered land mark and cultural property.

Since Muromachi era Nishijin has prospered in textiles. The place where the two roads, Imadegawa and Omiya cross, is called "Senryo-gatuji". It was a bustling place where vendors sold their raw silk valued at Sen-ryo (extremely high prices). In this area is Omiya Ichijo, a place with a long and distinguished history. Tonda-ya House was built about 120 years ago,
And maintains the typical historical Japanese style of a kyoto merchant's house.

The merchant's house continues to pass down the atmosphere of the Meji era from generation to generation.

Tonda-ya was handed down through 9 generations as a money exchange shop in Fushimi until the end of the early modern period, when in 1885 it was transformed to be this famous place as a wholesale store for Nishijin textiles. The house was expanded in 1935, now composed of three sections (A Japanese style guest room with tatami mats on the floor, a reception room and a tea-ceremony room). The tea-ceremony room was given a special name of "Rakujyu" by the Master of Tea-Ceremonies, Mr.Mushanokouji..

We hope to maintain our culture by retaining our house as a culture & land- mark Japanese Kyoto Style home. We tried to preserve the building representing a time capsule the history and culture of Kyoto, On display you 'll find some traditional instruments and furniture.

Your Wedding in a Historic Japanese House

Experience the grace, artistry and refinement of a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony in the historic setting of a Kyoto merchant’s home!

Your memorable special day begins with a tour of the 120-year-old house to prepare you for the lovely ceremony to come. We explain the history of Japan, its marriage customs, and the furnishings and decorations of this traditional home. When the house tour is done, you’ll eagerly look
forward to the truly timeless moment when you will exchange vows as they have been exchanged by loving couples for centuries in our country.

Following your tour of the house, you, the bride and groom, prepare for the ceremony by dressing in beautiful wedding kimonos and practicing movement in these supremely graceful, comfortable costumes.

Appropriately dressed, you proceed to the inner sanctum of the guest
house, where the ceremony takes place.

Your service begins with traditional welcomes and the bestowal of sacred Japanese bracelets to the betrothed couple. The officiant describes the blessed, happy state of marriage, and prepares the couple for their exchange of vows.

You exchange vows of love, respect and devotion with your beloved in the time-honored way.
