Turkey by Coach: Up Close and Personal
You’re travelling in Turkey. You see deluxe air-conditioned coaches carrying locals in complete comfort all through the country. You suspect they’re reasonably priced, and you crave the chance to climb aboard and rub shoulders with locals, and perhaps make more than a passing, superficial acquaintance of the kind so common in well-frequented tourist spots.
But you don’t speak the language. You have no idea of where or how to buy a ticket, and what will happen once you reach your destination. So you’ll probably settle for the tried-and-true solutions of booking an escorted tour with a guide who speaks your language.

This creates the intimate ambience of a village while still providing a sense of space and luxury. The resort combines Mediterranean and Ottoman architectural design elements, all the while complementing and respecting the property’s pristine natural surrounds.

An intricate interplay of light and shadow dapples narrow pathways and courtyards – some open, others tucked away for quiet moments. Building materials include local stone for structural walls, dark acajau wood for furniture, windows and door fittings, white Turkish marble for floors and hand-carved stone for interior wall details. Together, they form a timeless natural palette with clean lines and a contemporary feel.

Amanruya Resort – The experience
Amanruya Resort - Bodrum, Turkey

Amanruya Resort – Bodrum, Turkey

Amanruya provides a number of excursion options to the wealth of classical sites in the region, including the ancient ruined cities of Didyma, Miletus, Priene and Ephesus. The region also offers natural distractions including winding trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking or horse riding, and beautiful beaches and forest glades ideal for picnics. Boating and other water sports take precedence throughout the summer months, and a golf club offers avid golfers their fix. Amanruya Resort: The Experience

Bodrum
Called Halicarnassus in ancient times and situated just south of Amanruya, Bodrum has long been a favoured summer destination for Turkish city dwellers. Cafes, restaurants and bars have flourished along the city’s marina which is also the starting point of day trips to various Greek islands. Sailing around the Bodrum Peninsula on a gulet is an experience not to be missed.

Shopping in and around Bodrum is quite an adventure, with dozens of shops lining the busy narrow streets. Bodrum also offers a varied nightlife scene. Joining in the singing, dancing, eating and drinking at one of the local meyhanes (taverns) is an unforgettable experience. Bodrum also offers a number of historic sites including its most prominent landmark – the 15th-century Castle of St. Peter.

Didyma
Didyma is a prime tourist attraction due to the ruins of the world-renowned Temple of Apollo, built in the 7th century BC to honour the god of prophecy and oracles. By 500BC, this shrine had become one of the leading oracles of the Greek world, second only to the great oracle at Delphi.

Miletus
Miletus flourished as a centre for art and industry in its heyday, and its most striking attraction today is the 15,000 seat theatre, dating from AD100. The Baths of Faustina, dating from AD43 and named after the wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius are another site worth visiting, and the inspiration for the modern Turkish bath or hamman.

Priene
The ancient city of Priene enjoys a breathtaking setting between mountain and river and is believed to have been settled before 1,000BC. Remarkably well preserved, the city offers the Temple of Athena, built in the 4th century BC as directed by Alexander the Great. The theatre, dating from the 3rd century BC could seat 5,000 and the stadium still today features starting blocks for athletes and a gymnasium adorned with 2,000-year-old, school-boy graffiti.

Ephesus
The ruins of Ephesus (Efes), an ancient Greek city and later a major Roman city, are situated a 2½-hour drive north of Amanruya and can be visited on a day trip taking in Didyma, Miletus and Priene on the way. Other ancient sites worth visiting could include Labranda, Herakleia, Euromos and Pamukkale, with its hot springs, travertines and terraces of carbonate minerals.

Built around 1,000BC, Ephesus is one of the greatest ruined cities in the western world. Most of the surviving structures date from the Roman period when the city became the chief port on the Aegean. Noteworthy sites include the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, the Gate of Hercules, the theatre and the Colonnaded Street. The House of Mary is another attraction: It is said that the Virgin Mary spent her last days here being looked after by St. John the Evangelist.

It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave. In the latter it can form stalactites, stalagmites and other speleothems. It is frequently used in Italy and elsewhere as a building material.

Balloon flight is one of the best activities that you can join in Cappadocia and probably an experience of a lifetime.

At five in the morning, smoke is beginning to rise from the village chimneys below you. The barking of dogs, startled by the balloon, attracts sleepy villagers outside to wave enthusiastically. The weird twisted landscape of corroded rock to which you have partially become accustomed from the ground level, becomes even more unearthly when viewed from several hundred feet above. In two words? Breathtaking and Unforgettable!

Hot Air Balloon : You will be picked up from your hotel at 05:00 with Butterfly Balloon’s luxury vehicles (Mercedes Sprinter or Vito) and take you to the launch site in the early morning. While you have your open buffet breakfast which includes coffee/tea and snacks, the balloons will be prepared on the ground. You will have an opportunity to watch. The preparations take about 15 minutes. At around sunrise, the balloons begin to take off. They rise approximately 1000 feet to show you sunrise and extraordinary views of Cappadocia. Then they descend and float through the valleys, between fairy chimneys and caves which gives you excellent views to take pictures or videotape. The duration of this tour is approx.1 hour. The Standard tour uses a 12-16 person capacity balloons. This is a great option for those travelling on a budget. Upon landing, you will have a commemorative flight certificate. At about 8 am, the minibuses will take you back to your hotel. Your entire balloon adventure lasts about 3 hours. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Breakfast is included at the hotel. Pick up time from your hotel is 08:15 AM. We will drive by the Golden Horn before boarding the cruise.

Istanbul’s history was formed by the Bosphorus, the winding strait that separates Europe and Asia, connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Now, as in ancient times, it is a maritime vital link between the countries bordering the Black Sea and those in the rest of the world. Today we take a leisurely cruise northward along this historic waterway. Along its shores are ranged palaces great and small — Topkapi, Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi, Küçüksu, Hünkar Iskelesi. Four great fortresses rise on the hills, reminding us that to control the Bosphorus was to control the destinies of nations. After we disembark we will enjoy a visit to the aromatic Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar on the Golden Horn and Rustem Pacha Mosque.

Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, Turkey

Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, Turkey
By Dave Proffer [CC-BY-2.0], via Wikimedia Commons

Turkey, with its dramatic landscapes and disarmingly friendly people, is a land almost twice as large as California — located in the same latitude, but washed by the warm waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

Rolling steppe land and fertile river valleys are rich with fruits and nuts, wheat and corn, and plump melons. Mountain peaks here are capped by perpetual snows.

In its great cities you see a European-style cityscape punctuated by dozens of graceful minarets, and busy boulevards where taxis throng by the high-walled palaces and somber stone tombs of ancient sultans and pashas. The musty image of Turkey left from a century ago, when the sultan ruled and the Ottoman Empire encompassed all the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, are all but gone.

In its place visitors discover a modern, Western-oriented country familiar in many ways, yet still alluringly Old World and exotic. The delights of contemporary Turkey have been discovered by European and American vacationers.

They come for the beach side tavernas and ancient amphitheaters, the dependable sun, warm sea water, friendly people, and excellent cuisine – all at very reasonable prices. It’s no wonder that Turkey is among the world’s top 20 tourist destinations.
