Private Luxury Tour of Athens, Argolis or Delphi and a Romantic Escapade To The Luxurious Amanzoe Resort – For Guests Who Want The Best. Compare with the 4 day version.

Tour

DAY 1 – ATHENS
Arrive at Athens Airport, where you will be greeted by our local rep. and transferred to your hotel. Hotel Grand Bretagne, Hotel Athens or King George Hotel Athens. Your transfer, of course, is based on using a luxury air-conditioned private sedan or mini-coach depending on the number of guests in your party. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you like. Take your first look at this great ancient-modern city. Wander through the Plaka, and up to the Acropolis if you like, guidebook in hand.

DAY 2 – ATHENS PRIVATE CITY TOUR (B. Ice Cream – Tea – Coffee)
After breakfast, a half day private tour of Athens: You will tour the great Greek capital, including the new Acropolis Museum, Constitution (Syntagma) Square, Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, and the National Library.

Driving down Herod Atticus street you will see the Evzones in their picturesque uniforms and the Presidential Palace.

On your way to the Acropolis, you will see the Panathenaic Stadium (where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896), the Temple of the Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch.

The Acropolis hill, the so called “Sacred Rock” of Athens, is the most important site of the city. During Perikles’ Golden Age, ancient Greek civilization was represented in an ideal way on the hill and some of the architectural masterpieces of the period were erected on its ground. The first habitation remains on the Acropolis date from the Neolithic period. Over the centuries, the rocky hill was continuously used either as a cult place or as a residential area or both. The inscriptions on the numerous and precious offerings to the sanctuary of Athena (marble korai, bronze and clay statuettes and vases) indicate that the cult of the city’s patron goddess was established as early as the Archaic period (650-480 B.C.).

We will tour as well: The Ancient Agora of Athens was the heart of ancient Athens, the focus of political, commercial, administrative and social activity, the religious and cultural center, and the seat of justice.
The site was occupied without interruption in all periods of the city’s history. It was used as a residential and burial area as early as the Late Neolithic period (3000 B.C.). Early in the 6th century, in the time of Solon, the Agora became a public area. After a series of repairs and remodeling, it reached its final rectangular form in the 2nd century B.C. Extensive building activity occurred after the serious damage made by the Persians in 480/79 B.C., by the Romans in 89 B.C. and by the Herulae in A.D. 267 while, after the Slavic invasion in A.D. 580, it was gradually abandoned. From the Byzantine period until after 1834, when Athens became the capital of the independent Greek state, the Agora was again developed as a residential area.

Ice cream and coffee break, then head back to your hotel for siesta. In the afternoon / early evening your guide will call you for a walking tour of the Plaka ancient district, and then stop as well at one of the local (modest) tavernas for tea/coffee, before we head back to your hotel.

DAY 3 – Private Tour to Argolis – Then Amanzoe Luxury Resort at Porto Heli (BL)
Private air-conditioned vehicle, private guide. Leave Athens along the Saronic Gulf coastal road to the Corinth Canal, which connects the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea. Drive on to Mycenae, the Homeric City of the Atreides, “rich in gold” of the ancient poets. (Visit the Lion’s Gate, the Cyclopean Walls and the Royal Tombs). Drive through the fertile plain of Argolis to Nafplion, a picturesque town nestled at the foot of the Palamidi Fortress. After lunch, leave for Epidavros to visit the theater (4th Century B.C.), famous for its astonishing acoustics. Then we head to your Luxury Resort of Amanzoe at Porto Heli. Lunch in Mycanae or Nafplion.

Amanzoe pavilions
Every one of Amanzoe’s 38 guest pavilions has its own private swimming pool. Each Pool Pavilion offers a six-meter pool and each Deluxe Pool Pavilion features a 12-metre pool. The free-standing pavilions are arranged on different levels to maximize privacy and the breathtaking views over the Aegean. Each pavilion is accessed through a stone-wall courtyard that leads to spacious, high-ceiling living and sleeping areas. Beds are positioned in a marble-walled alcove which, together with the living area and bathroom, opens up onto the terrace, shaded by a pergola. Rooms are also available to accommodate guests with special needs.

Day 4 – Amanzoe Resort at Porto Heli (B)
Comprising a 38-suite resort and an Aman Spa, Amanzoe is Amanresorts’ third Mediterranean retreat – the Greek complement to Montenegro’s Aman Sveti Stefan and Turkey’s Amanruya. Drawing its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for ‘peace’ and zoe (pronounced zoi), the Greek word for ‘life’, Amanzoe is situated on a hilltop close to the quaint town of Porto Heli on the east coast of the Peloponnese. The resort offers almost 360º panoramic sea views as well as a private Beach Club in a picturesque bay.

Surrounded by undulating olive groves and overlooking the island of Spetses and the Argosaronic Gulf beyond, Amanzoe is just a 10-minute drive from the tavernas and vibrant life of Porto Heli. The road approaching Amanzoe ascends to the porte-cochere, a grand marble-clad edifice which serves as the entrance. Beyond lies the hilltop resort, arranged around an expansive reflection pool with spectacular views of the sea. A contemporary retreat embracing Greece’s rich history and culture, Amanzoe offers travellers an ideal base from which to explore the natural beauty, coastal pleasures and ancient heritage of the Peloponnese region.

Porto heli: The scenic town of Porto Heli is situated on the east coast of the Peloponnese and across from the cosmopolitan islands of Hydra and Spetses. Surrounded by a glittering blue sea, this area is the birthplace of legends and civilization, blessed by a history that embraces the Spartans and Romans, the Byzantines and Venetians, all drawn here over the millennia because of the region’s beauty, wealth and strategic location. Porto Heli itself is a district of the Municipality of Ermionida which includes the districts of Ermioni, Kranidi and Kilada. The entire area is often collectively referred to as Porto Heli.

Day 5 – Amanzoe Luxury Resort and The Experience (B)
Another day to relax, enjoy this Aman Luxury Resort or explore ancient sites. There is a wealth of ancient archaeological sites to explore in the area surrounding Amanzoe. These include the Medical Sanctuary of Asclepius and the renowned Amphitheater in Epidaurus, still host to internationally-acclaimed performances every summer (45 minutes from Amanzoe); the legendary citadel of Mycenae and the Mycenaean cemetery of Dendra (one hour from Amanzoe); the historic town of Kranidi which played an important role during the revolution against Ottoman rule in 1821 (10 minutes from Amanzoe); the ancient citadel of Tirynth and its dam, constructed around the 12th century BC; the early Bronze Age settlement of Lerna at Mili; the Temple of Hera close to Argos; and numerous Mycenaean bridges, each a feat of engineering on the road trip from Amanzoe to Nafplion or nafplion.

The historic city of Nafplion is situated just 65 kilometers away from Amanzoe. The first capital of modern Greece, it is well-known for its neoclassical architecture, the imposing Palimidi Castle overlooking the city, and the Bourtzi Castle in the middle of the harbour. Take a stroll in the old part of town, visit the archaeological museum, sample local cuisine at any of the sea-view tavernas and spend an evening enjoying the town’s live jazz bars.

Day 6 – Amanzoe Luxury Resort at Porto Heli (B)
Full day at leisure, the choice is totally yours if you wish to go island hopping. The peninsula is surrounded by numerous uninhabited islets, ideal for day trips, sailing excursions and swimming in secluded coves. Ten minutes across the water from Porto Heli by water taxi is the cosmopolitan and car-free island of Spetses, known for its sea-faring traditions, its heroic contribution to Greek Independence from the Ottoman Empire, its Venetian and neoclassical mansions with pebble mosaic courtyards, and its horse-drawn carriages. A bit farther away, but still within easy reach by water taxi is the island of Hydra. Also car-free and populated by historic sea captain mansions which evoke an ambience of centuries past, it is renowned for its vibrant dining scene and nightlife.

Historical, archaeological and nature treks:
Trekking in the beautiful scenery of the Peloponnese is an invigorating and memorable experience. Trek to the Frachti Caves from Kilada, or past Byzantine chapels, Mycenaean tombs and watermills on your way from Mycenae to the Temple of Hera (2 hours) or the village of Prosymni (3 hours). Other options include a light trek to the sunken hollows of Vythismata or the Bisti Forest at Ermioni.

Local produce:
The region has a reputation for its agricultural products including its citrus fruits, low-acidity olives, diverse fish and crustaceans and wine. Amanzoe offers guests the opportunity to pick olives and make their own olive oil (seasonal); join in the pomegranate harvest (seasonal); visit local sheep and goat farmers who make their own cheese; and collect honey (seasonal) on a trip to the local hives and honey museum. Within 90 minutes of Amanzoe there are numerous vineyards open for wine tasting.

Water sports:
Water skiing is available in the region’s sheltered bays; or why not find your own beach for the day either on a modern sailboat, a traditional Aegean kaiki or the resort’s Wally One powerboat? Amanzoe can also arrange fishing expeditions with local fishermen.

DAY 12: ISTANBUL (BL)
Istanbul’s history was formed by the Bosphorus, the winding strait that separates Europe and Asia, connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Now, as in ancient times, it is a maritime vital link between the countries bordering the Black Sea and those in the rest of the world. Today we take a leisurely cruise northward along this historic waterway. Along its shores are ranged palaces great and small-Topkapi, Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi, Küçüksu, Hünkar Iskelesi. Four great fortresses rise on the hills, reminding us that to control the Bosphorus was to control the destinies of nations.

Our afternoon cruise (morning cruise for Oct-Apr season) of two continents, crossing from Europe to Asia and back, includes visits to the Navy’s Museum (showing some magnificent boats used by the Ottoman Sultans), the Bosphorus Bridge, Çamlica Hill lookout, and stupendous Dolmabahçe Palace.

We enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Then go on a shopping spree at the labyrinth of the Grand Bazaar. You won’t want to miss The Grand Bazaar as it offers endless bargains in the 5000 stands, kiosks, and shops. Soak up the atmosphere of a traditional coffee house, complete with bubbling water pipes.

We dive right into this fascinating city with visits to its top sights: Topkapi, the palace of the Sultans for centuries; Hagia Sophia, the greatest church in Christendom for a thousand years; the Blue Mosque, with its exquisite blue tiles; the Byzantine Hippodrome, scene of chariot races and gladiator combat; and the eerie Sunken Palace cistern beneath it. Then we go on a shopping spree at the labyrinth of the Grand Bazaar. Join us for Istanbul by Night, a dinner tour with live music and belly dancing Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Tour

Day 1 in Athens- WELCOME TO ATHENS! May – Sep – Daily
Our staff escorts you from the airport to your hotel, with time left to start exploring Athens. Welcome fruit basket awaits you in your room. Plus one large bottled water for each guest.

Day 2 – ATHENS (BL)
Private air-conditioned vehicle. Private guide. On your first morning in Athens we show you the top sights: the Acropolis and its museum, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, and the Theater of Dionysus.

The Acropolis hill, so called the “Sacred Rock” of Athens, is the most important site of the city.

During the Classical period (450-330 B.C.) three important temples were erected on the ruins of earlier ones: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Nike, dedicated to Athena Parthenos, Athena Polias, and Athena-Apteros Nike, respectively. The Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the sacred area was also constructed in the same period.

The monuments on the Acropolis reflect the successive phases of the city’s history. Some of them were converted into Christian churches, houses of the Franks and later on, of the Turks. After the liberation of Athens from the Turks, the protection, restoration and conservation of the monuments was one of the first tasks of the newly-founded Greek state. This major effort is continued until today, with the large-scale restoration and supporting of the monuments, which started in the 1970’s and is still in progress.
The first excavations on the hill were conducted between 1835 and 1837. More systematic work was carried out in 1885-1890 by Panagiotis Kavvadias.

In the afternoon, plunge into the city as you like (on your own) for sightseeing and shopping. Lunch is included at a local restaurant. One large bottled water for each guest, plus tea or coffee, included with your meal. Private air conditioned vehicle, private guide, private chauffeur.
