Welcome fruit basket & Egyptian pastry awaits you in your room with our compliments.

DAY 2 – CAIRO (BL)
We plunge into Cairo: the treasure-filled Egyptian Museum including the “Mummies Room”; the Citadel of Saladin, perched high above the city; and Mohammed Ali’s Alabaster Mosque. After lunch at Hadaik el-Azhar or Naguib Mahfouz, we explore Old Cairo: first a Roman fort, then the Jewish Quarter, then the Coptic Christian Quarter. We visit the Coptic churches of Abu Serghius and Al Molaka, the Coptic Museum, and Ben Ezra synagogue. Finally, we wander through the alleys of Khan el-Khalili bazaar in search of magic carpets and other traditional souvenirs.

DAY 2 – Cairo – Alexandria (BL)
After breakfast, our local rep. will assist with your transfer to the Railway Station to board your first class reserved seats on the air-conditioned Express train to Alexandria. Upon arrival in Alexandria, your private guide, and private air-conditioned vehicle will be waiting for you.

Today, we’ll get to known Alexandria in depth, as we visit the Roman Amphitheater, the Koum El Shougafa Tombs and Qayet Bey Fortress. Qayet Bey Fort was built on the same site of the ancient wonder of the world: the famous Alexandria Light House. A brief stop at “El Selsela” the site of the underwater reserves where Cleopatra Place was discovered, as well as Caesar Kiosk. Lunch at a local restaurant, and then it’s off to the new site for the Alexandria Library. Time permitting we ‘ll visit the new museum in Alexandria, the building was originally built in 1926 for the US consulate in Alexandria and is a masterpiece in 1920’s architecture and Mediterranean style buildings. In the afternoon we tour: Zanket El-Setat and the local souks, el-Raml district and downtown area with coffee and tea served at one of the local cafes, then on to the railway station and back to Cairo, where our local rep. will be waiting for you at Cairo Station for your transfer to the hotel.

DAY 4 – CAIRO (BLD)
We drive to Giza to see the Pyramids, the Sphinx, Cheops Royal Barge Museum and the Valley Temple. If you’re physically fit, you may scramble deep within the Great Pyramid to the king’s chamber. After lunch at a local restaurant, we tour some of Egypt’s most ancient sites: the ruins of Memphis, the step pyramid of Sakkara, and the “bent” pyramid at Dahshour, open to visitors after a half-century of seclusion: A grand pyramid field south of Cairo. We visit the great pyramid of Senfru, father of Cheops, and other structures:

The “Discovery” of Dahshour:
For almost half a century, the great field of huge pyramids near the desert village of Dahshour, 25 miles south of Cairo, has been off limits to the public. Confined within the perimeter of a military base were many pyramids, including the great 4500-year-old pyramid built by Senfru, father of Cheops. Senfru’s pyramid, the largest in Egypt until his son built Giza’s Great Pyramid, is rhomboidal in shape: it tapers more distinctly on its upper half. All the pyramids were coated in thick plaster at one time. Most have lost these protective, decorative sheaths, but Senfru’s–miraculously–is still in place.

Lunch is included at the Mena House. In the evening, we host you on a Nile dinner cruise complete with exotic Egyptian entertainment.

Alexandria… Mediterranean Fantasy… and a Voyage Into History

Conquerors, emperors, ancient travelers and traders have all approached Alexandria from the sea . . . and so will you! Only Travel in Style makes it possible to experience the very essence of this ancient city as it should be experienced, as it was known by pharaohs, queens, and invaders from Marc Antony to Napoleon.

We’ll set sail into the great harbor, still the destination and port of call for ships from the far corners of the world. Landward, we’ll espy the great and throbbing maritime metropolis of Egypt. Our course will take us directly above statues that lie on the seabed, and stone slabs of the Lighthouse-one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World-toppled in an ancient earthquake. We’ll approach the great stone fortress of Qait Bey, reputedly constructed with some of those very stones.

Then we’ll set a course along the coast to the East Harbor, dropping anchor above the Royal City that was submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves in the fourth century A.D.

This underwater treasure house includes the palace of Cleopatra, the Timonium of Mark Antony, fallen columns and capitals, sphinxes, and statues and ceramics, much of it remarkably well preserved. Certified divers among our guests may book an optional excursion to explore this submarine Pompeii.

Along the way, we’ll view the spectacular Bibliotheca Alexandrina —the Library of Alexandria—as few are privileged to see it. Taking the stunning form of an inclined disk rising from the waters, it aptly captures the rebirth from the sea—in Pharaonic fashion—of the lost Alexandria Library of the ancient Greeks that held the works of the greatest scientists and philosophers of the ancient world. Like its namesake, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina serves as a storehouse of knowledge and a beacon of culture and intellectual expression in this part of the world. Our maritime view is just a preview of our visit to the library itself.

Finally, we’ll conclude an unforgettable voyage through history by setting a course to Abu Qir, where the French fleet under Napoleon was destroyed by Admiral Horatio Nelson.
The visit is a perfect counterpoint to a visit to the Qait Bey, where moving relics of the ill-fated fleet are on display.

Please note that this opportunity is limited to up to seven guests at a time. Two small cabins are available for changing and rest, as well as a bathroom, galley, dining salon, and sundeck. Our vessel is fully staffed by a crew of three, including captain. By prior arrangement, we can arrange for a sunset sailing, with cocktails and light music on your vessel’s sound system, or a full day of sport fishing.

We can also make arrangements for you to meet and share dinner as guests of a local family.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to go beyond the limits of the casual visitor, to share your aspirations, outlook, customs, and experiences with people who have a lot more in common with you than you might ever expect. If you’re interested, just let us know, and consider taking along something from your home town to leave with your hosts as a gesture of appreciation.

The recent discoveries join the New Library, opened just last year, among the top attractions in Alexandria. And the New Museum will shortly open in a historic palace that once housed the United States consulate

Come with us to explore where Pharaohs Akhenaton and Queen Nefertiti worshipped the Sun. They built great temples and pyramids along its banks, and cruised its placid waters in graceful gilded boats. To European explorers the Nile was the river-road to adventure. They sailed from Alexandria and Cairo on swift white-sailed feluccas, penetrating deep into the heart of Africa.

Day 1: Full Day – CAIRO – ALEXANDRIA  (Lunch Included)
Today, our local tour escort and driver will meet you at your hotel in Cairo, and escort you in your private air-conditioned vehicle to the Railway station to board the EXPRESS FIRST CLASS train for Alexandria. First class seats, reserved. Tickets are of course included in our rate. In Alexandria (Sidi-Gaber station), our guide will be waiting for you on the platform with a sign in your name. Once again, you ‘ll have your own private air-conditioned vehicle and private chauffeur. If you are starting in Alexandria, please click here.

Conqueror of the Mediterranean Coast – Alexander the Great
In 332 BC, Egypt was laboring under Persian military control when Alexander the Great arrived to drive out the invaders without the shedding of a drop of blood. The Persian governor surrendered and the conquering hero was hailed as a liberator and given Egypt’s double crown symbolizing control of Upper and Lower Egypt. Alexander reinstated Egypt’s traditional government and founded the city of Alexandria at the country’s most important crossroads: where the Nile meets the Mediterranean.

We’ll get to known Alexandria in depth, as we visit the National Museum in Alexandria. The building was originally built in 1926 for the US consulate in Alexandria and is a masterpiece of 1920’s architecture and Mediterranean style buildings. The Roman Amphitheater; the Koum El Shougafa Catacombs; Eliahou Halevi (or Hanabi) synagogue (Nabi Daniel Street) –  a 150-year-old synagogue, it is the only active synagogue in Alexandria, and houses the treasurers of the seven other older and / or closed Alexandrian synagogues –  and an afternoon horse-drawn carriage ride on the water front, and inspect the exterior of the mosque of the Alexandrine local “saint” Morsi Abu-Al-Abbas; a leisurely walk through the local souks and Zanket-El Setat to get a feel for this charming old part of Alexandria; followed by lunch which is included in an Alexandrine restaurant.

Later in the day we check-in at the legendary deluxe Helnan Palestine Hotel, overlooking the Mediterranean, and Al-Montazah Royal Palace of the former Royal Family of Egypt.

Al-Alamein WWII Commonwealth Cemetery. The battle's sad human cost.

Al-Alamein WWII Commonwealth Cemetery. The battle’s sad human cost.

Day Two: From Alexandria to Al-Alamein (BLD)
Full Breakfast is included at your hotel. Private air-conditioned sedan or private deluxe mini-coach. Today we head west and on to Al-Alamein, and Rommel’s territory.

To really enjoy the day and avoid the heat, we suggest that you start your day no later than 7 AM leaving from your hotel.

We’ll cross into another era of history today as we motor westward through the dunes along the Mediterranean coast following the route of Field Marshall Montgomery to El Alamein. Here we’ll visit the fields of battle where Rommel’s advance on Cairo was finally halted. We’ll visit the museum. Lunch included at el Alamein, before we head back to Alexandria.

We will tour the Military Museum, the Allied, Italian and German memorials. Before we head to Al-Alamein we will go to the Charm Hotel for lunch (tea, coffee, and bottled water included with your meal).

The local war museum has on display collectibles from “the civil war” and other North American battles. You will visit also the Italian and German Military Cemetery on Tel el-Eisa Hill just outside the tiny town. The German cemetery is actually an ossuary containing the remains of 4200 German soldiers which is built in the style of a medieval fortress. The Italian cemetery is a mausoleum containing many galleries of tombs. Wherever possible, each tomb bears the soldier’s name, but many are simply marked “IGNOTO” – “Unknown”.

El Alamein is on the Mediterranean Sea (see map). You will tour as well the Commonwealth war cemetery with graves of soldiers from various countries who fought on the British side. This has monuments commemorating Greek, New Zealand, Australian and South African forces. The Commonwealth cemetery, consists of parallel rows of gravestones, each one bearing an engraving of the deceased soldier’s unit emblem, his name and an epitaph from his family. Rows upon rows of gravestones stand witness to the battles’ human cost.

Lunch is included at the new Charm Al-Alamein Hotel and then we head back to Alexandria (about 70 kilometers to the east). Back at your hotel to enjoy the siesta. In the evening we drive to Mahatet El-Raml and hit town and a leisurely walk through the medina. We can stop, if you wish, at one of the local street cafes for tea or coffee with sweets. Dinner is included back at the hotel.

Alexander the Great's tomb

Octavious visiting Alexander the Great’s Tomb in Alexandria.
Octavious had just defeated Cleopatra and Marc Anthony armies. He left his coat at Alexander the Great’s tomb as a token of respect. The search continues for Alexander the Great’s Tomb.

Day Three: From Alexandria to Wadi El-Natroun and Cairo ( B, Lunch Box)
Full Breakfast is included at your hotel. Lunch Box prepared by your hotel. Private air-conditioned sedan or private deluxe mini-coach, always private chauffeur and private Egyptologist. Today we suggest that we start no later than 8 AM to avoid the heat. Tour of the Qayet Bey Fortress which is built on the same site of the ancient wonder of the world, the famous Alexandria Light House. Pompey’s Pillar and the Serapeum which houses the huge mummified Bulls that were were worshipped by Ancient Egyptians. Then a brief stop at “El Selsela,” the site of the Underwater reserve where Cleopatra Place was discovered, as well as Caesar Kiosk. Then it’s off to the new site of the Alexandria Library.

Video by ACG Travel Videos

We head south and on to Wadi El-Natroun, deep in early Egyptian Church territory and early Christianity in Egypt. Wadi El Natroun is almost half way between Alexandria and Cairo. We tour the Coptic Monasteries where early Egyptian Coptic monks and Popes used to seek refuge as Egypt fell finally under Rome’s influence and the Vatican aggressive effort to bring the Egyptian Church into the fold.

The two battles of El Alamein:

There were two battles of El Alamein, both of them during 1942. The Battles occurred in Egypt in and around an area named after a Railway Stop called El Alamein. During the Battles, Allied (primarily British Empire) forces were lead by British Field Marshall Claude Auchinleck during the first Battle and Bernard Montgomery during the second Battle. The first Battle ended in a stalemate in which the British finally stopped the eastward advance of the Germans and Italians who were under the command of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. These two battles are considered by many World War II historians to be the turning point in the war against Germany and the Axis Powers. Although much fighting remained in Africa and the European Continent, the importance of these battles might best be summed up in the words of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who in November 1942 stated that:

“The Germans have received back again that measure of fire and steel which they have so often meted out to others. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

Hatshepsut, the first Queen to rule as a Pharaoh of Egypt
Name: Ma’at-ka-Ra Hatshepsut

Ma’at-ka-Ra – her name means Truth/Order/Balance (“Ma’at”) is the Spirit/Double (“ka”) of Ra’ Hatshepsut – ‘Foremost of Noble Women’

Although not the only female ruler of Egypt, Ma’at-ka-Ra Hatshepsut (18th Dynasty) is one of the best known (next to Cleopatra). She managed to rule for about twenty years, before disappearing from history, coinciding with Thuthmose III’s becoming Pharaoh in his own right.

We will also stop by the Memnon colossi, before we head to:

Medinet Habu temple
The ancient Egyptian name for Medinet Habu, in Arabic the “City of Habu” was Djamet, meaning “males and mothers.” Its holy ground was believed to be where the Ogdoad, the four pairs of first primeval gods, were buried.

Medinet Habu was both a temple and a complex of temples dating from the New Kingdom. It adjoins the cultivation at the southern end of the Theban necropolis, opposite southern Luxor. The area was one of the earliest places within the Theban region to be associated with the worship of Amun. Hatshepsut and Tutmosis III built a small temple to Amun on the site of an earlier structure. Next to their temple, Ramesses III built his mortuary temple, Medinet Habu’s most conspicuous standing monument.

After a very full morning, head back to the hotel and check-in. Enjoy your siesta and a leisurely afternoon. Then we meet up again around 5 or 6 PM for a horse-drawn carriage ride around the town and a stroll through Luxor’s local souks and village.

Giza Pyramids and Sphinx

It is the one and only wonder which does not require a description by early historians and poets. It is the one and only wonder that does not need speculations concerning its appearance, size, and shape. It is the oldest, yet it is the only surviving of the Seven Ancient Wonders. It is the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The great pyramid is believed to have been built over a 20 year period. The site was first prepared, and blocks of stone were transported and placed. One theory involves the construction of a straight or spiral ramp that was raised as the construction proceeded. This ramp, coated with mud and water, eased the displacement of the blocks which were pushed (or pulled) into place. A second theory suggests that the blocks were placed using long levers with a short angled foot.

Tour

Day 1: Full Day – ALEXANDRIA – 9 AM-3 PM (Lunch Included)
Conqueror of the Mediterranean Coast – Alexander the Great. Based on using private deluxe Sedan or deluxe mini-coach and private guide (please advise the language of your preference). Minimum 2 guests

Today, our local guide and driver will meet you at the pier after you clear formalities. The driver will have a sign with your name (or advise us of the name you prefer that we list on the sign). If you are starting in Cairo, please click here.

We’ll get to known Alexandria in depth. We will visit the National Museum in Alexandria — the building was originally built in 1926 for the US consulate in Alexandria and is a masterpiece of 1920’s architecture and Mediterranean style buildings From there we proceed to the Roman Amphitheater; the Koum El Shougafa Catacombs; Eliahou Halevi (or Hanabi) synagogue (Nabi Daniel Street) — a 150-year-old synagogue that is the only active synagogue in Alexandria and houses the treasurers of the seven other older and / or closed Alexandrian synagogues; an afternoon horse-drawn carriage ride on the water front; inspect the exterior of the mosque of the Alexandrine local “saint,” Morsi Abu-Al-Abbas; a leisurely walk through the local souks; and Zanket-El Setat to get a feel for this charming old part of Alexandria. Followed by lunch (included) in an Alexandrine restaurant.

Then a brief stop at “El Selsela,” the site of the Underwater reserve where Cleopatra Place was discovered, as well as Caesar Kiosk. Then it’s off to the new site of the Alexandria Library.

Video by Wael Sharcas

Valley of the Kings
The Valley contains 62 tombs to-date, excavated by the Egyptologists and archaeologists from many countries. Not all of the tombs belonged to the king and royal family. Some tombs belonged to privileged nobles and were usually undecorated. Not all the tombs were discovered intact, and some were never completed.

Time permitting we include 3 Royal Tombs of our Ancient Pharaohs. King Tut’s (Tutankhamen); Hatshepsut, the first Queen to rule as a Pharaoh of Egypt Name: Ma’at-ka-Ra Hatshepsut; Ma’at-ka-Ra whose name means Truth/Order/Balance (“Ma’at”) is the Spirit/Double (“ka”) of Ra’ Hatshepsut — ‘Foremost of Noble Women’.
