In 332 BC, Egypt was laboring under Persian military control when Alexander the Great arrived to drive out the invaders without the shedding of a drop of blood. The Persian governor surrendered and the conquering hero was hailed as a liberator and was given Egypt’s double crown symbolizing control of Upper and Lower Egypt. Alexander reinstated Egypt’s traditional government and founded the city of Alexandria at the country’s most important crossroads where the Nile meets the Mediterranean. Today, we’ll get to enjoy a panoramic tour of Alexandria, tour the Koum El Shougafa Tombs, and then drive by Qayet Bey Fortress which was built on the same site of the ancient wonder of the world – the famous Alexandria Light House. Time permitting we’ll visit the new museum in Alexandria. The building was originally built in 1926 for the U.S. consulate in Alexandria and is a masterpiece of 1920’s architecture & Mediterranean style buildings. We then head west and on to Al-Alamein and Rommel’s territory. We tour the Military Museum and the Allied, Italian and German memorials. Before we head to Al-Alamein Charm Hotel for lunch (tea/coffee/bottled water included with your meal) we head back to Alexandria. We will tour the Al-Montazah Palace Royal Garden. On to a brief stop at “El Selsela” the site of the underwater reserve where the Cleopatra Place was discovered, as well as Caesar Kiosk, then it’s off to the new site for the New Alexandria Library before we head back to your ship.

Visit the Museum, the Roman Amphitheater, the Koum El Shougafa Tombs, and go on a leisurely walk through the narrow streets of Zanqet El-Setat and the local souks.

Visit the Museum, the Roman Amphitheater, the Koum El Shougafa Tombs, and the Eliahou Halevi (or Hanabi) synagogue (Nabi Daniel Street). The Eliahou Halevi synagogue is 150 years old and is the only active synagogue in Alexandria. It also houses the treasures of the seven other older and/or closed Alexandrian synagogues.

On this tour we’ll get to known Alexandria in depth as we visit the Museum, the Roman Amphitheater, the Koum El Shougafa Tombs, Eliahou Halevi (or Hanabi) synagogue (Nabi Daniel Street), and the Museum of the Crown Jewels (closed for repairs). Lunch is included in an Alexandrine restaurant.

Cairo from Alexandria or Port Said/Suez
It takes about 3 hours to drive from Alexandria to Cairo (225 kilometers)

Giza Pyramids and Sphinx
It is the one and only wonder which does not require a description by early historians and poets. It also does not need speculations concerning its appearance, size, and shape. It is the oldest, yet it is the only survivor of the Seven Ancient Wonders. It is the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The great pyramid is believed to have been built over a 20 year period. The site was first prepared and then blocks of stone were transported and placed. One theory on how the pyramid was built involves the construction of a straight or spiral ramp that was raised as the building proceeded. This ramp, coated with mud and water, eased the displacement of the blocks which were pushed (or pulled) into place. A second theory suggests that the blocks were placed using long levers with a short angled foot.

Old or Coptic Cairo, Egypt
Some Egyptologists believe that there was a settlement here as far back as the 6th century BC. Later, the Romans built a fortress here which we call Babylon. Some of these Roman walls still exist. Later, it became a Christian stronghold, with as many as 20 churches built within an area of one square mile. There are only five remaining, but these are certainly a must see when visiting Cairo along with the earliest Mosque ever built in Egypt. In addition, after the fall of Jerusalem in about 70 AD, the area also saw an influx of that religion into the area where the oldest synagogue is also located.

In Old Cairo we will also visit the Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) which derives its name from its location on top of the southern tower gate of the old Babylon fortress (in Old, or Coptic Cairo) with its nave suspended above the passage (Muallaqa translates to ‘suspended’). It is the most famous Coptic Christian church in Cairo, as well as the first built in Basilcan style (possibly). It was probably built during the patriarchate of Isaac (690-92), though an earlier church building may have existed elsewhere dating as earlier as the 3rd or 4th century. However, the earliest mention of the church was a statement in the biography of the patriarch Joseph (831-49), when the governor of Egypt visited the establishment.

Khan El Khalili in Islamic Cairo
I’d say this is the best tourist market in Egypt. The atmosphere of the market certainly has some life to it. Narrow streets, medieval gates, smoky cafes, and Mosque minarets towering above certainly give this part of Cairo a more authentic feel.
