After breakfast, a brief stop at Amman Museum where we’ll see some of the Dead Sea Scrolls:

THE SECRET DEAD SEA SCROLLS – A TALE OF WANDERING
The peoples of the Holy Land have wandered from homeland to dispersion, across the parted waters of the Red Sea, back to their homeland. So too, the Dead Sea Scrolls have followed an epic journey, from hazy origins in the time of the Second Temple, to secret caches, to their repositories today, where they are revered as the heritage of mankind. It was in 1947 that the first scrolls were rediscovered by Bedouin shepherds in the Qumran Caves overlooking the Dead Sea. Inscribed in Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek on parchment and papyrus, unmolested since before the time of Christ, they were the earliest original holy writings ever brought to light. Only dimly appreciated at first, they embarked on a journey that took them through the hands of dealers and connoisseurs, to Bethlehem, Lebanon and New York, and finally to Jerusalem.Discoveries continued, as 11 caves were explored, revealing scrolls and fragments of sacred texts and historical records of the construction of the Second Temple. Most found their way to the Rockefeller Museum, and later were incorporated into today’s Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem. But other treasures made their way to the Jordan Archaeological Museum, where they are displayed in an alcove at one end of the building, in an unpretentious setting that belies their importance. The collection includes a fragment of the Book of Isaiah, and the Dead Sea Bronze Scroll, an inventory of caches of valuables, composed in Aramaic characters, the vernacular language of Palestine at the time of Christ. As you gaze and at the scrolls in the museum, reflect on the Biblical events of which they speak that took place in what is now Jordan. Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt, and Lot fled to a cave in what is now Safi. Lot’s descendants ruled over Moab in Central Jordan. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire. Jesus preached in the Decapolis, the ten Roman cities of northern Jordan and southern Syria. The Israelites crossed this land on the way to exile in Persia; and Moses viewed the Holy Land from Mount Nebo, and expired.

We drive south along the King’s Highway, an ancient caravan route, to Madaba to visit the church containing the oldest known map of the Holy Land. Continuing to Mount Nebo, we enjoy the panoramic view of the Promised Land the way Moses saw it for the first time. Further on, at Kerak, we tour the ruins of its romantic Crusaders’ castle of Renaud de Chatillon, one of a line which stretched from Aqaba to Turkey. Finally, we arrive at PETRA. Lunch is included enroute. Private guide will escort you from Amman.

Petra, Jordan

Day 7 – Byblos – Jeita – Harissa – Beirut (BL)
Breakfast is included daily at your hotel. We head this morning toward the Jeita Caves, a vast limestone complex south of Byblos and north of Beirut, inhabited in prehistoric times. The caves hold the world’s largest known stalactite, and shelter a river that supplies water to Beirut, continue on to Byblos, one of the oldest inhabited cities anywhere, well worth the day we spend appreciating its many layers. Phoenician temples remain from thousands of years before the time of Christ, while a castle and the Church of St. John the Baptist bespeak the ebb and flow of the Crusades through the city. But Byblos is more than history. Its seaside location and backdrop of mountains make it a favorite locale for browsing, shopping, and lingering over a repast and beverages on terrace with views to ships, slopes, and treasured buildings. Later in the afternoon we’ll stop at the hillside and ride the cable car to visit Our Lady of Lebanon at Harissa, high above the city of Jounieh, noted for its statue with a chapel inside, as well as for spectacular views. By nightfall, we’ll find ourselves back in Beirut. Lunch is included today enroute (pre-set menu) served at  a charming local restaurant.

Today UNESCO lists Tyre as world heritage site.

Drive back to Sidon or Saida, one of the most important Phoenician city-state, its wealth came from the murex trade and glass manufacture, which was the best in the world at the time. Today Saida is a rapidly-growing town, the administrative and commercial capital of the south, where you can have a stroll in the old souks and visit the Crusader Sea castle, Khan El Franj, the Great mosque and many other interested places. Lunch is included today enroute (pre-set menu) served at a charming local restaurant.

In the afternoon we will visit the capital of Lebanon: Beirut – a city of contrasts. Beautiful architecture with small houses nestling in the shadow of tall modern buildings. DAY 11: CAIRO – Giza – Dahshour (BLD)
After breakfast we drive to Giza and the mysteries of the Pyramids and Sphinx, for interested guests: enjoy the usual photo opportunity riding a camel with the Pyramids and the Sphinx in the background with our compliments, and then we will tour the Museum of the Royal Barge of Cheops. The museum is built over the rectangular pit that housed the Royal Barge for thousands of years, the wooden boat was readied for the king’s daily journey with the sun god, Ra. Discovered in 1954, in a completely dismantled state, the 43-metre (140-foot) cedar boat is a rare window on the Royal boats used by the kings of Ancient Egypt.

We are glad to include as well the entrance fee to get inside the Great Pyramid, with our compliments, if interested, please read this first:

The King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid was not meant to be visited:
Getting to it is challenging, and once you enter, it is very difficult to turn back. The stone passage is only wide enough for one person. You must be in good physical condition, able to climb several flights of stairs, bend double, crouch and duck-walk for short distances. The King’s Chamber itself is the world’s most claustrophobic place, with dim light and heavy, hot, oxygen-poor air. There is no ventilation. If you are at all sensitive to claustrophobia or confinement, or if you have any sort of respiratory condition, for your own safety and the safety of others, you must not enter the pyramid because it is impossible to remove a person or to bring aid to them quickly, lunch is included at the Mena House.

Depending on the traffic, your guide may start the day with Dahshour then on the Pyramids after lunch. The time capsule treasure of Dahshour is the pyramid field south of Cairo:

DAHSOUR
We’ll motor to the edge of Cairo, to Dahshour, the newly-opened pyramid field south of Cairo. We will visit the great pyramid of Senfru, father of Cheops, and other structures.

The “Discovery” of Dahshour
For almost half a century, the great field of huge pyramids near the desert village of Dahshour, 25 miles south of Cairo, has been off limits to the public. Confined within the perimeter of a military base were many pyramids, including the great 4500-year-old pyramid built by Senfru, father of Cheops. Senfru’s pyramid, the largest in Egypt until his son built Giza’s Great Pyramid, is rhomboidal in shape: it tapers more distinctly on its upper half. All the pyramids were coated in thick plaster at one time. Most have lost these protective, decorative sheaths, but Senfru’s –miraculously – is still in place.

We stop at El-Haraniya before we head back to your hotel. Dinner is included at La Bodega restaurant or similar.

DAY 12: CAIRO (BLD)
Your exploration of the ancient world begins today! First stop is the Egyptian Museum, with its treasures of the ancient pharaohs: mummies, statuary, precious stones and metals. After lunch a charming local restaurant, we’ll also stop at the Citadel of Saladin and the Alabaster Mosque. Followed by a walking tour of Khan El Khalili and Muezzledeenallah ancient bazaar districts. Dinner is included at Abu-El Sid restaurant or similar.

In the Queen’s smaller temple dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Nefertari (The Beautiful One), who appears as Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and fertility, symbolized by the benevolent cow. We explore this fine temple by ourselves in the quiet of the morning, admiring their ancient aura and artistry, after which we fly back to Aswan, arriving in time for lunch at your hotel. Remainder of the afternoon at leisure. Dinner is included at the hotel. Evening Sound and Light show at Philae Temple transfers are of course included.

Jacquie Kennedy and Abu Simbel: All Americans alive during the 1960s remember President John F Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Most Americans from that time also remember Abu Simbel, the dramatic, ancient Pharaonic temple threatened by the rising waters blocked by the new Aswan High Dam. It’s worth remembering that it was Jacquie Kennedy who provided crucial support for the mammoth rescue project. Without her help, Abu Simbel might have been lost. …Read More

DAY 14: Aswan (BLD)
After breakfast at your hotel, we tour the Nubian Museum, the Botanical Garden Island, then head out to tour the enormous dams at Aswan, and then board a felucca on the Nile to visit the Temples of Philae, rescued from rising waters. Lunch is included at a local restaurant before we head out for a tour of Kalabsha Temple dedicated to the ancient god Mandulis, and the goddess Isis. Built during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, the small rock-cut temple of Beit El Wali, built by Ramses the Great, and the small yet charming Kiosk of Qertassi, as well as the Nubia Museum. Dinner is included at your hotel.

DAY 15: Aswan – Kom Ombo – Edfu – Luxor (BLD)

DAY 16: Luxor – Valley of The Kings – Deir El Medinah & More (BL)
Today we tour the Valley of the Kings, including King Tut’s Tomb, Seti I (subject to change for any closure due to repairs and maintenance), we will tour as well Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple of El Deir El Bahari, and the Colossi of Memnon. Break for lunch: Lunch box prepared by your hotel or served at a local restaurant, on to Deir El Medinah, the first known “Workers Village” these were the true creative heroes who built the temples & tombs for the mighty Pharaohs of the Nile Kingdom.

Deir El Medinah is on Luxor’s west bank where you get a totally different perspective on ancient Egyptian life at the ancient workers’ settlement of Deir el-Medinah. While most of the imposing stone monuments and sites of Egypt honor the lives and after-lives of royalty, Deir el-Medinah gives us unique and surprising insights into the ordinary citizens who constructed and decorated the tombs.

Here we’ll see the excavated homes shared by laborers with their domestic animals. These quarters were surprisingly large, with three good-sized rooms, courtyard, kitchen, and even storage cellars. While ancient Egypt might not have been a workers’ paradise, we’ll see that artisans and builders were highly regarded in their community. We are proud to be the only operator to offer regular visits to this singular ancient settlement in its tour and cruise programs.

DAY 17: Luxor – Cairo (BL)
Today we devote the morning to the grand mighty Karnak: the largest dedicated religious site ever built, full of sacred lakes, complex of temples, obelisks, grand statues and holy of hollies. Lunch is included and will be served at one of the nearby five stars hotels or a local restaurant, in the afternoon we will cover the charming Luxor Temple dedicated to Amon, then head back to the airport and fly back to Cairo and your hotel.

Tour

On arrival, our local representative will greet you at the airport and whisk you to your hotel. Visa may be issued upon arrival at Cairo Airport.

VIP Meet & Greet Upon arrival at Cairo Airport

Visa will be issued upon arrival at Cairo Airport for a limited number of citizens such as: American, Australian, NZ, EU, Canadian, EU Singaporean and Japanese citizens. A welcome fruit basket & Egyptian pastry awaits you in your room with our compliments.

DAY 2: CAIRO – Giza – Dahshour – Wednesday (BLD)

We’ll motor to the edge of Cairo to Dahshour at the newly-opened pyramid field south of Cairo. We visit the great pyramid of Senfru, father of Cheops, and other structures.

Most have lost these protective, decorative sheaths, but Senfru’s–miraculously–is still in place.

We stop at El-Haraniya before we head back to your hotel. Dinner is included at La Bodega restaurant or similar.

DAY 3: CAIRO – Thursday (BLD)
Your exploration of the ancient world begins today! First stop is the Egyptian Museum, with its treasures of the ancient pharaohs: mummies, statuary, precious stones and metals. After lunch a charming local restaurant, we’ll also stop at the Citadel of Saladin and the Alabaster Mosque. Followed by a walking tour of Khan El Khalili and Muezzledeenallah ancient bazaar districts. Dinner is included at Abu-El Sid restaurant.

DAY 4: Cairo – Luxor – Friday (BLD)
After an early breakfast, we board a short flight heading for Luxor the mighty ancient capital of the Egyptian Empire. Private transfers at all times, our local rep. will escort you to your hotel where lunch is included. Today we will tour: Luxor Museum, The Ancient Workers Village at Deir El Medineh, and on to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari, and the Colossi of Memnon. Dinner is included at your hotel.

DAY 5: Board Your Nile Cruise – Luxor – Esna – Saturday (BLD)
After breakfast at your hotel, we head to your Nile cruise (or board your Nile cruise in Aswan), our local rep will escort you to your Nile cruise, where a welcome fruit basket awaits you in your cabin with our compliments. Today we visit the gigantic Temple of Amon at Karnak, the pharaohs’ tombs in the Valley of the Kings, later on we cruise to Esna, where we enjoy a shipboard dinner.

DAY 6: EDFU & KOM OMBO – Cruising the Nile – Sunday (BLD)
At dockside, we board horse-drawn carriages for the short clip-clop ride through the town of Edfu to the stupendous Temple of Horus, the best preserved temple on the Nile. Returning to our ship, we set sail for Kom Ombo and its famous twin temples dedicated to the sun and the crocodile god. Complimentary Galabya, maybe to wear it for tonight’s costume party.

DAY 7: ASWAN & PHILAE – On Board Your Nile Cruise – Monday (BLD)
We explore the Temples of Horus and Sobek at Kom Ombo, haggle with peddlers for souvenirs, then re-board our ship for the voyage south to Aswan. In the afternoon, we take a motor launch to the Temples of Philae, rescued from the rising waters behind the High Dam, dedicated to the Ancient Goddess ISIS:

Two millennia ago the Mediterranean world was enthralled by the mystery of Isis: “I, Isis, am all that has been, that is or shall be; no mortal man hath ever seen me unveiled.” Called Aset by the ancient Egyptians, the goddess was a Madonna in the Mediterranean tradition that stretches far, far back to the primitive Mother Goddess from Anatolia, home to some of the oldest human communities on earth. Isis was the powerful and quick-witted protector of her son Horus, the Sun God. Ancient peoples throughout the Mediterranean regarded Isis and Horus as the perfect Madonna and Child. Another legend says she was also the mother of the fertility god Min who, judging from the depiction of him on temple walls, needed no help from Viagra! Isis is portrayed regally, as a queen seated on a throne (which may be the meaning of her name), often holding her son Horus as a baby. Other images show her with broad, magnificent gilded wings able to protect the world. Isis, the great Mother Goddess. Come explore her mystery in timeless Egypt when you Travel in Style!

Today’s cabin amenity: Complimentary Egyptian sweets/pastry tonight.

DAY 8: Disembarkation from Your Nile Cruise – Aswan – Tuesday (B)
After breakfast we check-out and proceed to tour Aswan Dams then a short camel ride (if you prefer riding a horse rather than a camel, please let us know) and on to a nearby Nubian Village for tea with the locals. Followed by a tour of the Nubian Museum before heading back to your hotel. In the evening, we will enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride along the Nile corniche and a leisurely guided walking tour of Aswan’s colorful bazaar.

DAY 9: SHARM EL SHEIK – RED SEA – Wednesday (B)
Now that you’ve seen the best of the Egypt of the Pharaohs, our guides escort you to the airport. You’ll fly over the Sinai Peninsula and land at historic Sharm El Sheik on the Red Sea. You’re at the beach and free to swim, or explore under the waters.

DAY 10: SHARM EL SHEIK – Thursday (B)
Relax! Today is set aside as a strategic mid-journey break. Spend some time in the sun, but don’t miss your chance to snorkel or dive under Red Sea waters for an array of coral and glittering tropical fish.

DAY 11: Sharm El Sheikh – PETRA – Friday (BL)
We’ll fly non-stop Sharm El-Sheikh Amman or via Cairo, our Jordan-based representative waits to greet you. Complimentary Jordanian visa fee (valid only for American, Canadian, Australian, NZ, EU & Japanese citizens. Passports must be valid for at least 6 month upon arrival). Lunch is included enroute.

DAY 12: PETRA – Saturday (BD)
We’ll spend the entire day at Petra, the stunning desert city hewn by the Nabateans from solid cliffs of pink and violet sandstone. You’ll feel like Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark as you penetrate into the city through a narrow sandstone gorge, the Siq, and wander among the Temple of the Winged Lion, tombs, Roman theater, and the imposing Treasury.

Dana Nature Reserve:
Dana Nature Reserve is a system of valleys and mountains, which extends from the top of the Rift Valley down to the desert lowlands of Wadi Araba, an elevation drop of over 1600 meters. It embraces two major bio geographical zones and four distinct vegetation zones and contains a remarkable diversity of landscapes, ranging from wooded highlands and rocky slopes to gravel plains and sand dunes. It supports a wide variety of wildlife, including many rare species of plants and animals. The total number of species recorded so far consists of 697 plants, 3 of which are new to science, and 282 animals. Many of these are now very rare and some threatened with extinction: animals like the Gray Wolf, Nubian Ibex, the Lesser Kestrel, Eagle Owl and the Desert Monitor Lizard.

Dinner awaits you at the unique Feynan Ecolodge:
Escape the beaten path. A sensory experience awaits. Deep in the heart of the mountainous Dana Biosphere Reserve, at the end of a rugged track, an idyllic candle-lit lodge rests in the magnificent Wadi Feynan.

The Arabian Oryx’s Story

Arabian Oryx

Arabian Oryx. Photo: shankar s., Dubai, UAE [CC BY 2.0], via Wikimedia Commons

The Arabian Oryx, an elegant white antelope, is one of the few mammals indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula. It became extinct in Jordan around the 1920s, as a result of the increased hunting for its meat, coat and horns. The increasing range and power of rifles compounded by the factor of motorized vehicles were the key to the extinction of the Oryx. The last known wild Arabian Oryx in the world was killed by hunters in Oman in 1972. Fortunately, previous to this incident, in 1962, the Flora and Fauna Preservation Society and the World Wildlife Fund had launched an international rescue effort known as Operation Oryx. A world survival herd was established in the USA, with three animals from Oman, one from the London zoo, one from Kuwait, and four from Saudi Arabia. This herd increased steadily in numbers, and the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature proposed that the Arabian Oryx should be reintroduced into its native habitat in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. In 1978, eleven Arabian Oryx were relocated in Shaumari. The number of Oryx has now increased to a phenomenal two hundred! Operation Oryx has been so successful that Jordan now supplies Oryx to other countries, which are conducting reintroduction programs.

Oryx Safari Tour
Guided only
Time: 3 – 4 hours
Altitude: 520 meters above sea level
Group size: 7 persons per car
Description:
Your professional nature guide will meet you at the gate to the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve in converted Land Cruiser safari vehicles. The tour begins with a brief about the reserve and what to expect on your journey through the desert. Midway through the safari, you will stop for a picnic and enjoy a hot cup of tea while taking in the beautiful semi-desert landscape of Shaumari. The reserve is an amazing place where you will learn about Shaumari’s unusual desert habitats and conservation history.
Oryx Safari Trail brings you close to one of the region’s most magnificent (and endangered) wild animals: the Arabian Oryx. This large white antelope, with its long, pointed horns, is an icon of Arabia and is thought to be the origin of the mythical unicorn. While touring Shaumari, you may also see the Persian Onager, another critically endangered species breeding successfully in the reserve. While we cannot guarantee that you will see any big animals on your trip, you will experience the special character of the Eastern Desert, with its surprising variety of vegetation and subtle colors.
During your tour, you will learn the basic principles of animal tracking and practice reading tracks. Your guide will also provide an overview of the reserve’s vegetation, pointing out different kinds of native plants and herbs and their uses.
In addition to the safari, guests will also see falconry displays and the Oryx breeding enclosure.

Our first stop is the Göreme Open Air Museum, with its dozens of ancient cave-churches carved from the soft volcanic stone. Many still contain their beautiful colored fresco decoration. Next we explore the monastic valley of Zelve, where whole monasteries were carved into the rock. In the Pasabag and Dervent valleys we view the “fairy chimneys,” pinnacles of volcanic rock formed by wind and water erosion over millennia. We enjoy a panorama of the Red and Rose Valleys before we head back for our hotel where dinner is included this evening ( bottled water included) . Transfers are always with a Private air-conditioned vehicle and a private chauffeur.

DAY 5: EXPLORING CAPPADOCIA – WHITE VALLEY (BL)
Today we explore the foremost sights in this historic, visually striking region and continue our explorations of Cappadocia with a visit to the natural rock hewn citadel of Uçhisar, one of the highest points in Cappadocia, and the nearby Pigeon Valley. Then we explore the lunar landscape of the White Valley to see its spectacular rock pillars, fairy chimneys, tunnels, caves and passages, after the tour we drive through the typical Cappadocian towns of Ürgüp and Ortahisar to experience daily life in this rich farming region, and perhaps to do some shopping, lunch is included enroute with bottled water,  then we make the short drive to Avanos, a traditional pottery-making town, to visit its innovative “cave cultural center”. The staff and students welcome us to enjoy Turkish tea and sweet cakes. We return to your hotel for a good night’s rest. Private air conditioned vehicle – Private chauffeur – Private guide.

DAY 6: CANYONS – LABYRINTHS (BD)
We drive across the rolling steppe of Central Anatolia to the dramatic canyon of Ihlara, filled with historic churches. A leisurely walk takes us through this dramatic scenery and past a dozen churches to the villages of Belisirma and Selime. Following our canyon walk, we drive to the town of Derinkuyu and descend into an underground labyrinth carved thousands of years ago. Hundreds of cave-rooms and passageways descend eight levels into the earth. Store-rooms, kitchens, larders, and churches show that this “underground city” was capable of housing thousands of people when danger threatened. On our way back we stop at the striking Agzikarahan Caravansaray, built by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century as a way-station for the rich camel caravans plying the Silk Route between Europe and Asia.

In the evening we visit an underground restaurant for a traditional Turkish folklore show, with dances and costumes from several regions rich in folklore, including Gaziantep, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. The mysterious and alluring art of belly-dancing, round out this enjoyable evening of traditional Turkish dance.

DAY 7: Kayseri/ IZMIR / Kusadasi (B)
We fly to Izmir via Istanbul (business class for the domestic flights within Turkey), from Izmir Airport  we drive to Kusadasi and your hotel where dinner is included this evening. Afternoon at leisure.

DAY 8: EPHESUS – KUSADASI (BL)
In the morning light. Then it’s off to biblical Ephesus to see the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist, who came here with the Virgin Mary. Passing the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, we reach Ephesus, the most impressive ancient city on the Mediterranean. Your tour includes the Terraced Houses. After our tour we continue to the hilltop House of the Virgin Mary, said to be her last home on earth.

Sirince Village Tour is included in the afternoon. This old Orthodox Village, 30 kilometers from Kusadasi, was once “Cirkince” (ugly). Indeed its inhabitants gave this name on the purpose as they did not want to be bothered by foreigners nor to share the beauty of their village. Still after years, visitors understood that the village was not ugly and called it “Sirince” (pretty). Today the village is a perfect synthesis of Turkish-Greek culture as of the 1920’s; after the Turkish Independence War, people exchange between Greek and Turks has occurred and all the typical Greek houses, though they kept their original outside characteristics, have received the local layout inside. At Sirince Village you will have chance of seeing the local life at a village and purchasing some small local souvenirs and handicrafts. The village is also famous for its local grape and other fruit wines. During the lunch, mingle with the local people of the village as you will be a guest in their village for a simple cup of traditional Turkish coffee at the main coffee house of the village. Depending on the number of guests, a gypsy woman may read your fortune after you finish your coffee. We spend the night again in the Aegean resort of Kusadasi.

DAY 11: PETRA (BLD)
Breakfast is always included daily at the hotel. Your private guide will always escort you throughout the Petra trip. We drive south along the King’s Highway, an ancient caravan route all the way to Petra Madaba Church and Moses Lookout. We drive to Madaba to visit the church containing the oldest known map of Palestine and the Holy Land. Jordanian food at its best – home cooking in a Jordanian home turned into a restaurant. Not far from the church that has the mosaic floor. The restaurant offers, as well, an outdoor patio. True warm hospitality! Bottled water is included with all your lunches and dinners on this tour.

Petra, the stunning desert city hewn by the Nabateans from solid cliffs of pink and violet sandstone. Petra was known in the bible as Sela, and rediscovered only in 1812. You’ll feel like Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark as you penetrate into the city through a narrow sandstone gorge, the Siq, and wander among the Temple of the Winged Lion, tombs, Roman theater, and the imposing Treasury. Horse Ride is included in Petra. If you prefer, you may walk if you wish.

Petra has a lot to tell. The visit starts at the visitor’s center, where each person is assigned a Bedouin guided horse for the journey to the entrance of the lost city. After passing some tombs, which are located outside the city, the visitor passes through the SIQ, an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone. It is a winding, one-kilometer-long fissure between overhanging cliffs that seem to meet more than 300 feet overhead.

Near the end of the passage, the SIQ, with great style, makes one last turn and out of the gloom in towering brightness appears Petra’s most impressive monument, el Khazneh – The Treasury. This is one of the most elegant remains of antiquity, carved out of the solid rock from the side of the mountain, is nearly 140 feet high and 90 feet wide.

Beyond el Khazneh the visitor is surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra’s carved and built structures, soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a carved Roman theater, large and small houses, burial chambers and much more. The Victorian traveler and poet, Dean Burgon, gave Petra a description which holds to this day – “Match me such a marvel save in Eastern clime, a rose-red city half as old as time.” After that, we will return to the hotel to get prepared for a special dinner. In the evening we will call on you for a unique experience:

Dine as a local:
The Petra Kitchen is a delightful way to round out your Jordan travel experiences. Like any home kitchen, The Petra Kitchen is a relaxed, informal atmosphere where you’ll gather to prepare an evening meal, working alongside local women under the supervision of our chef.

Great care has been taken to make The Petra Kitchen a truly Jordanian experience—right down to the furnishings, all crafted in Jordan, the tableware, all produced by the Iraq al Amir Women’s Co-operative, and the aprons and table linens, all hand-embroidered by the Jordan River Foundation.

Only dimly appreciated at first, they embarked on a journey that took them through the hands of dealers and connoisseurs, to Bethlehem, Lebanon and New York, and finally to Jerusalem.

Discoveries continued, as 11 caves were explored, revealing scrolls and fragments of sacred texts and historical records of the construction of the Second Temple.

In the evening visit Kan Zaman Village for dinner, a Folklore show and a preview of the many handicraft ateliers. Private air-conditioned vehicle, private chauffeur, private guide.

The are seems to have been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times; and some recent finds even date to Paleolithic times, around 100,000 years ago. Then travel southeast to Jerash, among the best-preserved cities of the Romans, and walk among its colonnaded temples and theaters, enjoy lunch at a charming local restaurant, and continue to Ajloun to tour the 12th century Saracen Castle built by one of Saladin’s lieutenants in the campaign against the Crusaders, before heading back to your hotel in Amman.
