Marrakech
Located right off the famous Djemaa El Fna square in Marrakech, the Riad Monceau is a small luxury hotel that dates from the 18th century, but was refurbished throughout in 2002 and transformed into an elegant Marrakech boutique hotel. It is a haven of peace combining the character and charm of an authentic luxury riad with all the creature comforts expected of modern accommodations. It is truly a gem of Hispano-Moorish architecture.
Owned by the French artist Isabelle Aubry, a number of whose major canvas embroideries are on exhibit within its walls, the riad offers the warmth and conviviality of a private house subtly underscored with their top-quality boutique hotel service.
They have enchantingly beautiful rooms with luxury furnishings and superb en suite bathrooms (private Jacuzzis overtopped by domes of 5 meters high for the Pasha and Persian suites). There is a refreshingly cool Andalusian patio paved with Carrara marble and boasting a fine swimming pool inlaid with traditional mosaic, and spacious sun-drenched terraces with views of the Koutoubia mosque. Bask in the warmth and softness of the traditional hammam-spa where the hands of their beautician and masseuse works wonders.
There are culinary delights offered every night by the Riad Monceau’s famed, on site, Moroccan gourmet restaurant. It is the Mecca of Moroccan cuisine in the Marrakech medina which recently promoted and hosted the famous MarrakChef Moroccan Gourmet Trophy. Restaurant Riad Monceau also hosts in the morning their famous Moroccan cookery workshops that offers many opportunities to discover the subtle intricacies of a generous and genuine Morocco.
What a great last day. We went to cooking school and yes John did it too! We got there and they promptly handed us our shopping baskets and off to the local market where we bought all of the ingredients including a live chicken the our chef picked out and had de-feathered and made ready for cooking. John learned to chop!! It was a great way to spend out last day, thank you Omar for the itinerary! –Kathy and John
