Private Cruise Ship Shore Excursions in Greece & Turkey

The cruise regular shore excursion are generally a good introduction to the city, most of the seasoned cruise travelers prefer to go sightseeing with a private guide.

The difference between ship organized and private tours is best described as “package versus tailor-made.” Some people may feel all right joining a large tour group whereas sometimes it is difficult to hear the guide and the group moves only as fast as its slowest participant.

Others may not get their questions answered at all as there may be twenty other people in the group trying to do the same.

In contrast, a small tour group with tailor-made program is way more enjoyable and ensures personal attention for everyone. You will spend as much time as you want.

Therefore, if you want to maximize your limited time, the private escorted tour tailored to your unique wishes and interests is an ideal solution.

All our private shore excursions tours are carefully designed to give you the best possible experience. Hospitality Trumps Bottom Line at Emirates – April 2010

Dust cloud over Europe! Passengers stranded worldwide, usually without assistance from their airlines, except…

In keeping with its core values and traditional hospitality, Emirates Airlines stepped forward to ensure that each and every one of thousands of passengers delayed in Dubai and elsewhere received three meals a day and accommodations.

The cost to Emirates is well over $2 million a day in addition to its lost passenger revenue. But to passengers who would have been left out in the cold by other airlines, the value is priceless.

Maybe it’s time for guests to consider travel with airlines that really care.

Then on to The secret Tomb of Khedive Tawfik One of the gems of Cairo lay hidden for years behind locked gates in a nondescript neighborhood: the tomb and gardens of Khedive Tawfik. The Khedive was the viceroy who administered Egypt for the Turkish sultan. It was Tawfik’s father, Khedive Ismail, who saw to the construction of the Suez Canal. In the process, he mortgaged the nation, and threw Egypt into turmoil. Tawfik was installed in his father’s place. But with foreign bankers pressing on one side, and resentful nationalist officers on the other, he was ineffectual. British troops moved into the Suez Canal area to protect their investment—and didn’t leave until 1952, when the monarchy was given the boot. Tawfik’s mausoleum far outshines his rule. The original family burial area was enlarged in 1881 and decorated with a splendor not seen since the times of the Pharaohs. Columns with intricate Islamic-Mameluke decoration adorn the entrance, while parts of the gold-threaded woven cover of the holy Kabah of Mecca adorn the walls inside the doorways. The tomb of Bambah Qadin, in white marble, is impressive, but that of Tawfik himself is stunning: constructed of ebony, with inlays of ivory, mother-of-pearl, and precious woods. Elsewhere are the tombs of other family members, including that of Price Muhammad Ali, who married a French actress. Even the family library is here. With treasures like these, it’s no wonder that the precincts were closed off from public view in uncertain times. Even today, Tawfik’s Tomb and Gardens are off the beaten track for most visitors, but at Travel in Style, we’re proud to include this little-known treasure house of Egyptian history and art on our regular tours. Dinner is included at Abu El Sid restaurant in Zamalek.

The Mystery of Isis: Two millennia ago the Mediterranean world was enthralled by the mystery of Isis: “I, Isis, am all that has been, that is or shall be; no mortal man hath ever seen me unveiled.”

Called Aset by the ancient Egyptians, the goddess was a Madonna in the Mediterranean tradition that stretches far, far back to the primitive Mother Goddess from Anatolia, home to some of the oldest human communities on earth. Isis was the powerful and quick-witted protector of her son Horus, the Sun God. Ancient peoples throughout the Mediterranean regarded Isis and Horus as the perfect Madonna and Child. Another legend says she was also the mother of the fertility god Min who, judging from the depiction of him on temple walls, needed no help from Viagra!

Because of her wisdom and skill at protection, she was admired as a good magician capable of healing the sick and protecting the dead in their journey to the Underworld. Isis is portrayed regally, as a queen seated on a throne (which may be the meaning of her name), often holding her son Horus as a baby. Other images show her with broad, magnificent gilded wings able to protect the world.

Isis, the great Mother Goddess. Come explore her mystery in timeless Egypt when you Travel in Style!

Back on land, we visit an ancient Pharaonic red granite quarry, then Nubian Museum before we take a short flight to Abu Simbel. There we’ll marvel at the temples dedicated to Ramses the Great and Queen Neferatri, saved from rising waters of the Nile when the High Dam was built,in the larger temple, colossal figures of Ramses are seated with the gods and attended by his queen and daughters. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari, who appears as Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and fertility, symbolized by the benevolent cow. Lunch is included at one of Abu Simbel hotels, then fly back to Aswan and connect with our returning flight to Cairo and your hotel.

DAY 4 – Cairo Fayoum- Tuesday (BLD)

On Desert Safari for the Day – Fayoum Oases – And you thought the Pyramids were old

The wilds of the desert begin right on the outskirts of Cairo, and continue for hundreds of miles to the east and west, through sands, rock, mountains, oases, and a surprising variety of scenery and inhabitants.

Join us for a day ranging across the desert like modern nomads. In place of camels, we’ll travel in comfortable, reliable four-by-four Toyota Land Cruisers. Your guide and drivers will meet you at your hotel, and soon you’ll leave bustling Cairo behind as you undertake the drive toward the Oasis of El Fayoum, 150 kilometers to the southwest. Hard as it is to believe, a great inland sea once covered these sands. It was a holy reserve of sacred crocodiles, symbolized by the god Sobek.

We’ll visit the temple of Kom Oshim, drive over ancient lake beds, and alongside the waters of today’s Fayoum Lake to reach the fishermen’s village of Chak Chouk. There we’ll stop for a lunch of fish caught fresh that morning. There will be time to wander the village lanes and discreetly watch the everyday activities of baking flatbread, irrigating crops from the lake’s waters, and bringing in the catch. We’ll also include the craft and pottery museum where the best works of local artisans are on display.

Then it’s into our four-by-fours again, for an off-road adventure! We’ll head alongside and across desert washes, between dunes, and over ancient lake beds for 35 kilometers to the Valley of the Whales ( In Arabic : Wadi-El-Hitan) . Incredibly, these great mammals once thrived – almost forty million years ago- in waters surrounded by sands. We’ll stop and gaze in amazement at their fossilized remains alongside smaller sea creatures that remain in stone. This valley was discovered in 1936, by the German geologist George Schweinfurth in the northwestern corner of Wadi El-Rayan.

The valley provides evidence of one of the major changes in this mammal evolution has been declared by the UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site. It is believed that these land based whales once had feet that may have helped them somewhat while ashore. A team from the University of Michigan discovered in the late 80’s that these Zeuglodon whales did have rudimentary feet, this was a startling discovery, suggesting that whales of Wadi -El-Hitan had recently started living in water as well, these whales were not related to any of the whales we have today, rather a more slender body and may grow up to 75 feet long. Several skeletons of whales are exposed in the sand. George Schweinfurth named this extinct specie the Zeuglodon Isis Whales.

Petra has a lot to tell. The visit starts at the visitor’s center, where each person is assigned a Bedouin guided horse for the journey to the entrance of the lost city. After passing some tombs which are located outside the city, the visitor passes through the SIQ, an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone. It is a winding, one-kilometer-long fissure between overhanging cliffs that seem to meet more than 300 feet overhead. Near the end of the passage, the SIQ, with great style, makes one last turn and out of the gloom in towering brightness appears Petra’s most impressive monument, el Khazneh – The Treasury. This is one of the most elegant remains of antiquity, carved out of the solid rock from the side of the mountain, is nearly 140 feet high and 90 feet wide.

Beyond el Khazneh the visitor is surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra’s carved and built structures, soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a carved Roman theater, large and small houses, burial chambers and much more. The Victorian traveler and poet, Dean Burgon, gave Petra a description which holds to this day – “Match me such a marvel save in Eastern clime, a rose-red city half as old as time.” after that we drive to Amman and our hotel. Nefertiti Turns Egypt Upside Down!!

The first bloodless religious revolution against the established church in Ancient Egypt and the seat of power that rested with the priests in Karnak.

Nefertiti conducts the religious ceremony at
the temple wearing only a see-through cloak!

nefertari2

Nefertiti Turns Egypt Upside Down!! 1350 BC – Queen Nefertiti is reported to have led her Egyptian subjects on a wild spree of idol-smashing, temple-destruction, and forced migration, all part of a campaign of religious reformation. In Egypt a temple painting of a well-endowed Nefertiti in a chariot, wearing only a see-through cloak and thong-style panties, may explain why it was easy for Egyptian to follow her to the end of the Earth.

“From now on, there will be only one Deity, and that Deity is Aten, the Sun Disc,” she has commanded.

Reliable sources in the Nile Valley report that all temples to gods other than Aten have been closed, and that a hefty fine will be imposed on anyone caught with an outlawed statuette.

Idols are to be smashed immediately, and the shards turned over to the priests of Aten.

“The capital of Egypt will now be at Tel El Amarna,” reads a decree widely circulated in cuneiform on clay tablets.

“All priests are to settle within one hour’s journey of the new Temple to Aten. All bidders on public works contracts will likewise have their head offices within the same specified distance.”

Egyptian leaders in exile have disputed the motives behind the upheaval. “It’s just a ploy to concentrate power and wealth in her hands and those of her husband, Ikhnaton,” stated one defrocked priest.

“Everybody knows that Nefertiti has risen to her position on qualities that have nothing to do with religion.

She isn’t called Incarnation of Beauty for nothing,” he added, referring to the literal meaning of her name. The source asked not to be identified, fearing reprisals. Tel El Amarna, Nile Valley, 2004 – from Paul Glassman, special correspondent “Wow,” commented Joe Shiner, an agro-businesman from Des Moines, as he toured the main temple at Tel El Amarna. “It’s one thing to hear that Nefertiti was a real beauty. But it’s quite another to visit in person and learn the real story.” “Until I came here, I didn’t know that she was behind the idea of having only one god-even before the Hebrews and Christians and followers of Mohammed.

“And now that I see her picture, I can understand why people followed her. This is not what I expected . . . not at all!” Mr. Shiner gestured as he spoke to a temple painting of a well-endowed Nefertiti in a chariot, wearing only a see-through cloak and thong-style panties.

“If she was my queen, I’d follow her to the end of the . . . “
Mr. Shiner’s comments were interrupted by the approach of his wife.

“……. ( Nefertiti) the Heiress, Great in the Palace, Fair of Face, Adorned with the Double Plumes, Mistress of Happiness, Endowed with Favours, at hearing whose voice the King rejoices, the Chief Wife of the King, his beloved, the Lady of the Two Lands, Nefertiti, May she live for Ever and Always”

DAY 2- The Heart of Ancient Israel-Samaria: Shilo, Mt. Gerizim-Jacob’s Well – Shechem, Emmanuel-visit Orthodox Jewish settlement. – Saturday

SAMARIA IN THE LIGHT OF THE SCRIPTURES
Alon Moreh — The traditional site from which God first promised the Land of Israel to Abraham. (Gen 12:6 Other references: Deut 11:30, Judges 7:1)

Emmanuel/Contemporary Jewish settlement — visit a modern Orthodox Jewish settlement in this politically sensitive area.

Mt. Gerizim or Mt. of the Blessings — At 9,514 meters above sea level, this mountain stands slightly lower than its counterpart to the north, Mt. Ebal. Both mountains tower over the city of Shechem (modern Arabic: Nablus). After Israel’s victory at Ai, Joshua led the people of Israel here (and Mt. Ebal) to recite the blessings and curses of the Torah as God had commanded. (Deut 11:29; 27:12-13 Josh 8:30-35) Here also the Samaritans erected a temple to rival the Jewish one. John Hyrcanus destroyed it in 129 BCE, fueling the animosity between Jews and Samaritans. The “woman at the well” whom Jesus met in Samaria pointed to Mt. Gerizim when she said, “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain.” (John 4:19-24)

Mt. Ebal or Mt. of the Curses — 10,170 meters above sea level, at the Northern side of the Biblical city of Shechem (modern Arabic: Nablus). Tradition has it that when Israel recounted God’s commandments here, the blessings were read from Mt. Gerizim facing, while the curses were read from Mt. Ebal. (Deut 11:29; 27:1-8, 12-13) The “woman at the well” whom Jesus met in Samaria was from the village of Sychar located on the slopes of Mt. Ebal. (John 4:4-6)

Shechem — Nestled between Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal, this city saw a parade of Biblical heroes, from Abraham to Jacob to Joshua to Jesus, pass through. After the destruction of the temple in 70 CE, a new city was established, “Neapolis”, from which comes the present day Palestinian city of Nablus. This was both Abraham and Jacob’s first stop in the Holy Land when they came from the East. For the many Biblical references, see: Gen 12:6; 33:18-19; 34:1-31 Deut 27:4-13 Josh 8:30-35; 17:7; 24:1-28; 24:32 Judges 9:1-57 Psalms 60:6; 108:7 1 Kings 12:1-14; 12:25 1 Chr 7:28; 6:67 2 Chr 10:1-19 Jer 41:5 John 4:1-42

Video by Israel

Shiloh — The first religious center for the tribes of Israel after they entered the Land; thus, the dwelling place of the tabernacle before the temple was built in Jerusalem. This is also where Samuel the prophet started his ministry, as well as the site of many other events in Bible history. (1 Samuel 1-2; Joshua 18:1, 8-10; 22:10-12; Judges 21:15-22)

View over Tirza — View over the old capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Samaria

DAY 3 – Up the Coast to the Galilee: Caesarea, Mt. Carmel, Megiddo, Sea of Galilee, Tiberias- Sunday

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS AROUND THE SEA OF GALILEE
Chorazin — A first-century A.D. Jewish town in upper Galilee two miles north of Capernaum. Along with Bethsaida and Capernaum, this center of first-century Jewish life was rebuked by Jesus (Matt. 11:20-24; Luke 10:13-15). Excavations of the now deserted town indicate that it once covered an area of twelve acres and was built on a series of terraces with the basalt stone local to this mountainous region. The synagogue was one of the earliest in the area.

The Galilee Experience — A Multi-Media presentation of 4000 years of history of the Galilee, with a fine Christian Souvenir & Bookstore.

Jordan River Baptismal Site — A once in a life time experience to be baptized in the waters of the Jordan River as Jesus himself did.

Kursi in the land of the Gadarians — This is where Jesus cast out the Legion demons from a man, and commanded them to enter the ill-fated flock of swine. Matt 8:23-34; Luke 8:26-39). The site of the largest Byzantine monastery in Israel.

Mount of the Beatitudes — Here, the famous Sermon On The Mount took place. (Matt.5)

Mount Arbel Overlook — This peak on the western shore of the Galilee, just north of Tiberias, provides a spectacular view of the whole Galilee area.

DAY 4- In the Footsteps of Jesus in the Galilee: Boatride on Sea of Galilee, Mt. of Beatitudes, Tabgha, Capernaum, Chorazin, ‘Galilee Experience’ – Monday

Sea of Galilee Boat Ride — The wooden, first-century style boat takes us across the area where most of the Gospel stories took place. See the same waters upon which Jesus walked. (Mark 5)

Video by Barrett Lang

St.Peter Fish-Lunch — Enjoy the same type of fish that was eaten in the days of Jesus and his disciples. (John 21)

Tabgha — The site of numerous springs on the NW shore of the Galilee. The springs provide plenty of warm water, even in winter, making it a major site for fishing on the sea. It is the traditional site of the feeding of the multitude, although many scholars believe that this actually took place somewhere on the east coast of the Galilee, (Luke 9:10, John 6:1). This is probably the place where Jesus met with his disciples while they were fishing and where Jesus first called his disciples, charging them to be “fishers of men.” (Matt 4:18-24; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:1-11…John 21:1-24)

DAY 5 -The Northern Reaches of the Promised Land: Gamala, Golan Heights, Katzrin, Banias, Tiberias -Tuesday

THE NORTHERN BORDER REGION
Banias/Caesarea Philippi — “Banias” is the original name of this site near Mt. Hermon in the North, famous as the place where Peter first confessed that Jesus is the Messiah. (Matt 16:13-16; Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-21) Here too Antiochus III of Syria defeated the Egyptians in 197 BCE, taking control for the Seleucid Dynasty, which set the stage for the repression of the Jews by Antiochus IV and the revolt of the Maccabees (commemorated by the Jewish festival of Hanukah.)

Gamla — A town which was the seat of Jewish resistance under the Romans; from here the “Zealots” planned much of their activity. A precursor to events in Masada, in that the Jews of this fortified town chose mass suicide instead submitting to Roman capture. Today, this area is a beautiful nature reserve, with the highest waterfall in Israel (51 meters).

Golan Heights — Part of the very fertile plateau of Bashan between Mt. Hermon and the Wadi el-Yarmuk east of the Jordan River. The northern security-belt of Israel, won from Syria during the Six Day War in 1967.

Katzrin — A reconstructed model village from Second Temple/Talmudic times; see how people lived, worked, and ate in ancient Israel.

Nimrod Castle — Massive 12th century castle overlooking the Hula Valley. Originally built by Muslims atop a precipice, to protect the road from Tyre to Damascus; it changed hands many times in the battles with the Crusaders.

Tel Dan — Dan was the northernmost city of ancient Israel, thus when Scripture speaks of all of the Land, from North to South, it often says, “from Dan to Beersheva.” (Judges 20:1 1 Sam 3:20 2 Sam 3:10; 17:11; 24:2; 15 1 Kings 4:25) Abraham traveled from Hebron to Dan to rescue his nephew Lot from Kedorlaomer. The tribe of Dan was not satisfied with its inheritance near Judah, so it settled here and set up idolatrous

DAY 6- Acre – Haifa – Tel Aviv (B)
Our local rep. will call for you after breakfast and drive up the cost to Acre, a Crusader stronghold in the Middle Ages. After a view of the fortifications, we’ll drive back around the bay to Haifa, Israel’s main port, a scenic cluster of neighborhoods climbing seaside slopes. Stops will include the Bahai Shrine, the Persian Garden, and Mount Carmel, where we’ll take in a panorama stretching from the port up the coast almost to Lebanon. On our way back to Tel Aviv, we’ll stop at the extensive and well-preserved Roman city of Caesarea whose buildings tell of a way of life through baths, plazas and a theater that is still used for major concerts! Later structures bespeak Crusader defenses. This evening will be your chance to do your last-minute shopping for Israeli souvenirs, and to enjoy a fine dining experience from among the many choices in Tel Aviv. Your guide will be pleased to make recommendations. Sample Hotels : Deluxe : Dan Tel Aviv or similar. For your tours: Private air-conditioned vehicle, private chauffeur and private guide.

ISRAEL’S DEEP SOUTH and THE NEGEV
Bedouin Camp and Camel Ride — Spend an evening in an authentic Bedouin (nomadic herdsmen) camp; enjoy their food, their tent-based lifestyle, and a two hour camel ride! Mitzpe Ramon Crater — Halfway to Eilat lies this giant crater, a favorite site for hikers and campers, and famous for its beautiful sunrises.

DAY 9- Eilat: Free Day (Optional underwater observatory) – Saturday
Eilat — Israel’s southern most city and the country’s world famous winter sun resort center on the Red Sea; Eilat is an international city featuring hotels in every price category and a wide range of water sports and other active holiday activities. The city’s Coral world Underwater Observatory is a must.

Caves of Bet Guvrin — A prominent city in the period of the Second Temple, located in the southern Shephelah. (Hilly region to the west of Jerusalem). Today it is a small kibbutz of a few hundred people. Famous for its numerous and cavernous caves.

Emmaus — ancient town in the Judean Valley of Ayalon, 20 mi. (33 km.) N.W. of Jerusalem. Here, Jesus appeared before his disciples after his crucifixion and resurrection (Luke 24:13-16). Tel Maresha

DAY 11 – Jerusalem of Today – Bethlehem of Yesterday: Holyland Hotel model of 2nd Temple Jerusalem, Knesset, Yad Vashem, Israel Museum-Shrine of the Book, Bethlehem – Tuesday

THE NEW CITY OF JERUSALEM & BETHLEHEM
Bethlehem/Shepherd’s Field — Originally a small village on the road from Jerusalem to Hevron. Here took place the story of Ruth and Boaz, and is the birthplace of both David, and David’s greatest son, Jesus. Here also can be found the tomb of Rachel. Many believe the site of The Shepherd’s Field to be the place where angels of the Lord visited the shepherds to announce the birth of Israel’s King and Savior. (Gen 35:16-20 48:7 Ruth 1 Sam 16:1-12; 17:12 Micah 5:2 Luke 2:1-7, 8-20 Matt 2:1-18)
