The eruption that buried Pompeii in ash buried nearby Herculaneum in mud. A guided walking tour explores this well-preserved site, which remained undiscovered until 1709. Try a real Neapolitan pizza at lunch. Visit the Archaeological Museum home to a collection of artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum including the fabled “Farnese Bull.” Shop for handmade jewelry and delicate brooches at a local cameo factory.
The drive from Naples on the autostrada affords views of the Bay of Naples and the still-active volcano, Mt. Vesuvius.
Herculaneum – Discovered in 1709, Herculaneum was buried under mud during the eruption of Vesuvius – which preserved the city. Your walking tour takes in well-preserved Roman villas with portico gardens, fountains and baths. The highlights include the well-preserved wall frescoes and floor mosaics.
Visit a cameo factory in Herculaneum and browse for handmade jewelry, including delicate brooches, rings and bracelets.
Once you are back in Naples, take a short orientation drive around the city; drive past the round-towered Castel Nuovo, San Carlo Opera House, Umberto I Gallery, the Royal Palace, San Francesco di Paola Church and the Castle of the Egg overlooking the spectacular Gulf of Naples.
National Archaeological Museum – Originally a cavalry barracks, Charles of Bourbon established the museum in the late 18th-century to house the Farnese collection he inherited. The highlights include the Farnese Bull, a classical Roman sculpture depicting figures from Greek mythology. The museum possesses an extraordinary collection of murals, frescoes and mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Stop at a typical Neapolitan “Pizzeria” restaurant where you will taste the real Pizza. The world’s first true pizzeria opened in Naples in 1830 and the pizza became known throughout the world for its unique taste.
Note: This tour is not available on Tuesdays because the Archaeological Museum is closed.

Difficulties: Extensive walking involved for the inside visit of Herculaneum excavations. Cobblestones and uneven surface included.
